Who We Are

Welcome to Christ Church!

The people of Christ Church are followers of Jesus who gather together for worship, fellowship, study, service to others, and prayer, all in the Episcopal tradition. Founded in Winnetka in 1876 and descended from the Church of England (Anglican), the people of Christ Church are known in the community for our extensive outreach to the Chicago area and our choir program.  Our Rummage Sale has been held for over ninety-five consecutive years.  In the ten years prior to the pandemic, we have been able to give to our ministry partners throughout Chicago, through our sales, over $200,000 a year. Our parishioners adopt hundreds of families each Christmas in addition to reaching out to those living in shelters through our diocesan Episcopal Charities organization. Our international outreach is focused in partner relationships in SE Mexico and South Sudan.  Our intergenerational choir, following the Royal School of Church Music curriculum, numbers over 75 members.  They sing each Sunday during the ‘school year’ as well as during special services monthly on Sunday afternoons and evenings. Additionally, they travel every other year to England and are the ‘choir in residence’ in an English Cathedral for ten days.

This community values the relationships built while living out our lives and our faith at Christ Church.  As a number of our youth have said, “Christ Church is a place where I can just be myself.  I’m not competing with anyone and I know that when I come to church, I’ll always be accepted.” This feeling of security is consistent with the notion of ‘sanctuary’, an architectural term referring to a part of the church building.  Sanctuary for those who join our fellowship extends beyond the word itself and is found in the community created by our friendships, which are inspired and sustained by the Mercy of God in Christ.

“What brings me here each week is the amazing community of people and the many opportunities for fellowship, worship, and service, both within our church, and to the greater community.”
